Every Upcoming Video Game Movie and TV Adaptation in 2026 and Beyond
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil just proved the boom still has legs, and the slate behind it is bigger than any year before.
Sony's Resident Evil reboot opened on September 18, and Zach Cregger's film has already passed $100 million at the domestic box office in under two weeks.
That makes it the third highest-grossing film in the franchise, and it lands in a year that already delivered Mortal Kombat 2, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Return to Silent Hill. The first Super Mario movie grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, and studios have been chasing that result since.
When this article first ran in 2022, live-action game adaptations were still a gamble. Now they are a genre. Here is everything still on the way.
Still to come in 2026
Street Fighter arrives on October 16, 2026. Ryu and Ken start the story estranged from fighting culture, until Chun-Li drags them into a conspiracy at the heart of the World Warrior Tournament.
The Angry Birds Movie 3 is listed for December 23, 2026, though at least one tracker has it in January 2027, so check before you publish.
On TV, Ark: The Animated Series (seven episodes, Paramount+) and Sekiro: No Defeat (Crunchyroll) are both listed for 2026 without exact dates.
2027 and 2028 movies
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 opens March 19, 2027. The Legend of Zelda, the live-action film directed by Wes Ball for Nintendo and Sony Pictures, follows on May 7, 2027. A Minecraft Movie sequel is set for July 23, 2027. An unnamed Sonic universe event film is slated for 2028.
Death Stranding is in development at A24 with Hideo Kojima involved, and is listed for 2027 with no date. It is separate from the Disney+ animated series. Horizon Zero Dawn is also listed for 2027.
Helldivers is listed for November 10, 2027, with Justin Lin directing. The cast has changed: Reacher star Alan Ritchson is reportedly in talks to replace Jason Momoa.
The TV slate
The biggest change since 2022 is God of War. Dave Bautista has taken over as Kratos from Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep during filming, and scenes already shot with Hurst need to be reshot. Ronald D. Moore is showrunner, and the series has a two season order covering the stories of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. There is no premiere date.
The Last of Us is renewed for a third season at HBO, still without a confirmed date. Ghost of Tsushima is now an anime series at Crunchyroll, listed for 2027, and Death Stranding: Isolations is an animated series at Disney+, also listed for 2027.
Tomb Raider is in development at Prime Video with Phoebe Waller-Bridge leading the series and Sophie Turner as Lara Croft. Persona is reportedly headed to Netflix as live-action, Wordle is in development at NBC, and Mass Effect, Life is Strange and Wolfenstein are all in development at Prime Video.
Announced, but no release date
More live-action series in development: Alan Wake, Assassin's Creed (Netflix), Atomfall, Baldur's Gate (HBO), Disco Elysium (Prime Video), Far Cry (FX), Hunt: Showdown, Pacific Drive, A Plague Tale: Innocence, Pokémon (Netflix), Skull & Bones, System Shock, Vampyr (Fox) and a Forgotten Realms series at Netflix.
More animated series: Clash of Clans, Crash Bandicoot, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, Diablo, Minecraft, Secret Level season 2 and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch season 2 (all Netflix), plus Dead by Daylight and Grounded. Hitman at Hulu has been cancelled.
More movies in development: BioShock, Bloodborne, Broken Sword, Call of Duty, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Control, Days Gone, Dead by Daylight, Dragon's Lair, Dredge, Duke Nukem, Elden Ring, F.E.A.R., Firewatch, Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Gears of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Grow a Garden, Hello Neighbor, The House of the Dead, It Takes Two, Just Cause, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Mega Man, Metal Gear, Outlast, OutRun, Pac-Man, a Pokémon Detective Pikachu sequel, Poppy Playtime, Portal, Rabbids, Riders Republic, Saints Row, Sea of Thieves, Sifu, The Sims, Sleeping Dogs, Slime Rancher, Space Invaders, Stray, Streets of Rage, Ghost Recon, The Division, Vampire Survivors and Watch Dogs.
Announcements are cheap and releases are not. Plenty of this list will stall or die, as Hitman already did. The test for each one is whether it has a director, a studio and a date.
