Lanterns Season 2: Everything We Know
Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who co-created the series are not expected to return to the season 2 writers' room.
Lanterns season 2 has not been officially confirmed by HBO, but work is already underway on a possible second season of the DC Studios series.
The first season of Lanterns ended on October 4th, with Aaron Pierre's John Stewart finally becoming a Green Lantern after the death of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan. The finale also left several parts of the story open for a possible second season.
Is Lanterns season 2 happening?
HBO has not officially renewed Lanterns for a second season. However, that does not mean the show has been cancelled.
Showrunner Chris Mundy revealed in August that he and Christopher Cantwell were already working on a potential second season. Mundy said they were about six weeks into breaking the story and would soon present their plans to HBO and DC Studios.

The potential season 2 writers' room has also been assembled. Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Vanessa Baden Kelly are working under Mundy, according to recent reports. Baden Kelly is the only writer from season 1 currently reported to be returning to the room.
Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who co-created the series with Mundy, are not expected to return to the season 2 writers' room.
What could season 2 be about?
In our review of the first season, we saw that John Stewart now has a very different role going forward. He is now Earth's Green Lantern and has chosen to operate outside the traditional structure of the Corps.
Mundy has said a second season would be told in a "slightly different way", while still using characters audiences already know. He has also said the story would most likely remain Earth-based rather than returning to Rushville.

That could allow the series to move away from its first season's murder mystery and focus more directly on John's life as a Green Lantern.
There is also the possibility of more Green Lanterns appearing. Mundy recently mentioned Kilowog when discussing characters the team has considered for a possible second season, although there is no confirmation that the character will appear.
Will Hal Jordan return?
Hal appears to die in the first season, although his digital Halogram remains with John until the end. The finale also leaves parts of the wider Green Lantern mythology open, meaning there are ways the character could potentially return.
However, there is currently no confirmation that Kyle Chandler will return for season 2. The more certain future for the series is John Stewart, with Pierre already confirmed to appear as the character in the upcoming DC Studios movie Man of Tomorrow.
Bottom line: Lanterns season 2 is not officially confirmed yet, but it is further along than a typical cancelled-or-renewed question might suggest. A writers' room is working on the story, John Stewart has a clear future in the DCU, and the creators have already discussed how they would take the series in a new direction.
