# PS4 Surrenders and Allows Full Crossplay Support for Fortnite

The dam finally broke. Crossplay support is coming to PS4!

In a move that signals a massive shift in strategy, Sony announced today that it is launching an open beta for **Fortnite**. Gamers will now be able to join players on different platforms including PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.

Epic Games' super-popular Battle Royale title **Fortnite** heralded a sea-change in the way players approach online gaming. Players were suddenly able to go head to head with friends in a massive online world where your console or device didn't matter. However, with the launch of the hit-game on the Nintendo Switch, PS4 owners trying to log into their Epic Games accounts on the Nintendo console found they were effectively locked out. Cue the outrage.

Sony has been feeling the pressure from developers, gamers, and its rivals to open its gates but the company was very adamant that it wasn't interested in crossplay - understandable since as the market leader, it had more to lose financially. This policy change is effectively Sony caving in as part of a comprehensive process to allow cross-platform play for select third-party games.

"For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective," John Kodera, global CEO of PlayStation, said in a [statement](https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/09/26/extended-fortnite-cross-play-beta-launches-on-ps4-starting-today/?ref=thenaijanerds.com) on the company blog. "Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players."

He also added, "This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change."
